Resume keywords for sales representatives (2026 list)

Sales is the one field where a resume is judged almost entirely on numbers — and where the ATS filter still comes first. Before a hiring manager sees a single percentage, the applicant tracking system is scanning for the CRM you've used, the sales motion you know, and the process terms the posting itself uses. Miss those, and the strongest quota attainment in the world never gets read. (Here's how that screening actually works.)

Below are the keywords that show up again and again in 2026 sales postings, grouped by category, with notes on where to put them and how to pair them with real numbers. This is a reference for describing sales work precisely — not a list to dump into a skills box.

Core skills

prospecting · lead qualification · cold outreach · pipeline management · needs analysis · objection handling · consultative selling · solution selling · account management · contract negotiation · territory management · forecasting

"Sales skills" matches nothing. "Consultative selling" and "territory management" describe distinct, testable approaches — an ATS search and a sales manager reading the resume are both looking for the specific method, not the general category.

Tools and software

Salesforce · HubSpot Sales Hub · Outreach · Salesloft · ZoomInfo · Apollo · LinkedIn Sales Navigator · Gong · Chorus · HighVelocity · Pipedrive

CRM and sales-engagement platforms are the most literal keyword match on a sales resume — a recruiter searching "Salesforce" either finds it or moves on to the next candidate. List the platforms you ran your pipeline in daily, not ones you saw in a demo.

Certifications

Salesforce Certified Sales Cloud Consultant · HubSpot Sales Software Certification · Certified Inside Sales Professional (CISP) · Challenger Sales certification · Sandler Training certification · Miller Heiman Strategic Selling

Most individual contributors don't hold a formal sales certification, and that's normal — this category carries more weight for senior AE, sales engineer, and management postings. If you have one, give it its own line near the top of the resume.

Action verbs and metrics language

closed · generated · exceeded · negotiated · prospected · upsold · retained · expanded · onboarded · forecasted

Every verb on this list needs a number attached, because sales resumes are read as proof of production, not description of duties. "Closed deals" says nothing. "Closed $840K in new business against a $600K quota" is the sentence that gets a callback.

The honest shortcut

Knowing this list isn't the hard part — checking your resume against each specific posting's version of it, application after application, is. That per-posting check is what Coverpilot automates: open the posting, click once, and see which of its keywords your resume already covers and which are honestly missing. Fix the gaps, then apply.
